When a company cuts it’s prices it’s cutting it’s margins. the most popular app on the market even now is 3d max, it’s now the most expensive for a base level app (and yes that includes houdini), but it doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Since it’s actually pretty easy to get the student version if your a hobbyist, as I think I’ve proved, I suppose the above is a manifesto for a price increase, which is a bit weird I suppose! On the other hand, if it was suitably publicised I think it could attract a LOT of new users for Maxon, which would be great.
As it is, I’ve got it much cheaper, but I feel like a bit of a cheat!
In the UK, I think maybe £500 for a ‘hobbyist licence’ of the XL bundle would be reasonable, and attract a lot of interest. use it as much as you like but no commercial work). I suspect that most hobbyists, who have other full-time jobs and have no intention of making a living from C4D, would be prepared to pay somewhere in between the student and full retail price for a limited licence along the lines of the current student licence (i.e.
But I’m not really a CG student, I’m a hobbyist, and I’m not going to revolutionise Maxon’s client base! After all, it must be a good thing for Maxon to get CG students working with C4D at an early stage, so that hopefully they can influence their future employers. I think the student discount is a great idea and I think it’s probably pitched at the right sort of level (£150 in the UK).
I’m only a hobbyist and couldn’t really justify outlay of £1300, which is why I was very pleased to discover that Maxon (a) operated a student discount and (b) were prepared to give such a discount to someone who went on a flexible online course costing $20 at I wouldn’t say that the discount was the only reason I went on the eclecticacademy course (and indeed, it’s shaping up to be very interesting and useful) but it was pretty persuasive. Well, I’m now the proud owner of the r9 XL bundle.
